Physical Attributes

The first thing that you will want to know about this spider is exactly how large are we talking about. The Goliath tarantula can grow to be over a foot in diameter with fangs that measure over an inch in length. The fangs look like walrus tusks because they hang down so low. All of the hair on the legs might look like they are simple fur to keep the spider warm. In fact, they are all sensors which help the spider to know where it is going so that it will be able to capture prey and stay on course.

How It Hunts

Because of the size of the worlds largest spider, the Goliath does not spin a traditional web. Instead, what it does is it casts a spindle near where it lies in wait for a hapless victim to stroll past. Anything up to a small mouse can be dinner for the tarantula. As soon as the spider feels a tug on the web, it jumps into action and bites the victim. As long as the prey is not too large, it will die quickly and the spider will then be able to eat them at their leisure or even bring it to the nest.

Safe for Humans

While the worlds largest spider might seem pretty scary, the Goliath tarantula is actually harmless to humans. While there have been a few reported cases of bites form one, they are rare. There have also been no reported cases of anyone dying from a bite. This is because while the spider is large, the poison that they use is fairly weak in comparison to a spider like the black widow or the brown recluse.
